THE SEQUENCING JOURNEY - 3 TOP TIPS
As yoga teachers, we are forever challenged with creating new sequences and content to stand out in the crowded landscape. This can potentially be overwhelming and exhausting. It takes constant practice, patience, and refinement week over week. So here are some tips to get you started!! .
1. KNOW YOUR STUDENT
What kind of class are you teaching for example is it a dynamic flow, slow flow or maybe a sequence for runners and cyclists? What do you think your students need and want and let this be your guide when putting together your sequence. With this in mind be really to adapt with what you see in the room on the day. You may have the perfect sequence but be prepared to modify if necessary.
2. TAKE YOUR STUDENTS ON A JOURNEY
Make sure there is a beginning a middle and an end. Think about the point you want to take them for example to a peak pose. Start low and slow and build up to a peak or two or even three and then safetly bring them down again. A complete and effective yoga sequence is one that allows students to progress steadily, safely and simply from one place to another in their personal practice.
3. PRACTICE YOUR SEQUENCE
Once you have designed your sequence try it out yourself. In this way you can start really feel what your students will be feeling so this is a great way to find cues for your class and maybe adapt the sequence to to a place that maybe feels better in the body. You could even just roll out your mat, put on your playlist and start flowing while you are designing to start to get inspiration for the sequence, allowing your creativity to flow. Most of all have fun!! The more fun you have with this the more fun your students will have.
